Title: Variations on projection of 2-mode network
Authors: Vladimir Batagelj - IMFM (Slovenia) [presenting]
Abstract: A two-mode network links nodes of two types (modes), with each link having end-nodes of both modes. For example, the authorship network WA links each work to its authors. The usual approach to analyzing a two-mode network is to create a corresponding one-mode network on works or authors using the projection row(WA)=WA*t(WA) or col(WA)=t(WA)*WA, where t(WA) is the transpose of the WA network, which can then be analyzed using methods for weighted network analysis. The problem with ordinary projections is that high-degree nodes of the other mode are overrepresented in the projection. A solution is offered by a fractional approach in which the projection is applied to a normalized network. Ordinary and strict (Newman's) normalization are available and can be refined by taking into account the importance of each node. The theoretical background of various two-mode network projections is supplemented with examples of their use on real-life large networks.
