Title: Income and wealth inequality by gender: An empirical analysis Authors:  Kamila Trzcinska - University of Lodz (Poland) [presenting]
Abstract: Income is one of the key economic categories, as it reflects the material conditions of individuals and social groups and serves as an important indicator of living standards and overall well-being. Wealth, understood as the accumulation of assets, constitutes a complementary dimension of economic status. In contrast to income, wealth is typically much more concentrated, which makes it particularly relevant for the analysis of economic disparities. Existing literature indicates that inequalities in income and wealth may contribute to social tensions, weaken cohesion, and negatively affect economic stability. The aim is to investigate income and wealth inequality by gender in selected European countries. The analysis of income distributions for women and men is conducted using the Zenga distribution, allowing for a detailed assessment across different segments of the distribution. Inequality in both income and wealth is further examined through the decomposition of the Gini coefficient, enabling the identification of key sources of disparities. The empirical analysis is based on data from the European Central Bank (2021), ensuring cross-country comparability. The results provide insights into the nature and drivers of gender-based economic inequalities.
