Abstract: The class of Hierarchical Identifiable Saturated models corresponding to a given design is termed the Statistical Fan of the design. The relationship between a design matrix and its statistical fan is investigated with regards to three aspects: (1) The advantages and disadvantages of a Grobner basis approach to finding a Hierarchical Identifiable Saturated model for a given design matrix are discussed; (2) An alternative, practitioner-led, approach to finding a Hierarchical Identifiable Saturated model is outlined; (3) Conditions on design matrices are developed to ensure the inclusion of specific terms in every leaf of the fan. The results are illustrated by examples.
